Initiate

A video introduction using illustrations, personal stories, metaphors, or active learning examples to begin the discussion.

Interact

After the video, prompts are supplied for thinking and sharing with others personal perception and experience. This opening activity prompts participants to think about and relate to the topic, and to share with others.

But when we hear big numbers—like how many stars are in the sky or how much energy the sun puts out—they can feel so far from our everyday experience that we just tune them out. Still, these numbers point to something massive and mind-blowing.

Try to guess just how big these things really are:

1. How many cups of water are in the oceans?

2. How many grains of sand are on all the world’s beaches?

3. How many stars are in the observable universe?

4. How much energy does the sun produce every second?

5. How strong is gravity between Earth and the Moon?

Answer Key:

  1. About 5.6 sextillion cups (That’s 5,600,000,000,000,000,000,000 cups)
  2. Around 7.5 quintillion grains (That’s 7,500,000,000,000,000,000 grains)
  3. Roughly 200 sextillion stars (That’s 200,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars)
  4. About 380 septillion watts (That’s 380,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 watts)
  5. Around 200 quintillion newtons of force (That’s 200,000,000,000,000,000,000 newtons)

Putting it into Perspective.

Can you imagine that every drop, every grain, every star, every watt of energy, and every force of gravity, was spoken into existence by God the Word?

Insight

The Bible discussion begins with a careful reading of the whole passage, either from your own Bibles, or from the provided images below.

Then participants are to ask:

  1. What is going on in this passage of Scripture?
  2. What are the key words and phrases? Highlight them.
  3. Why do you think this passage is included in the Bible?
  4. What does it contribute to our “knowing Christ” and “living in Christ”?

Download PDF of John 1:1-5

John 1:1-5 opens with a breathtaking truth: before anything began, Jesus—the Word—already was. He is not just present at creation; He is the Creator. The vastness of the universe, from galaxies to gravity, finds its origin in Him. But this isn’t just a statement of cosmic bigness. It’s a personal declaration that the One who made everything has stepped into the world He made.

Hebrews 1:1-3 tells us that God, who once spoke through prophets, has now spoken through His Son—the exact imprint of His being. In other words, Jesus makes the invisible God visible.

Colossians 1:16-17 goes further: everything was made through Him and for Him, and He holds it all together. That means you are not random or forgotten; you were created on purpose, by a Person. Jesus is not only the source of life but also the subject of all history. As He said in John 5:39, “The Scriptures testify about me.”

What does it mean that the Author of light and life chose to enter our story? And how might your life change if you truly believed that the Creator knows you—and wants to be known by you?
